CS Grupetto

We are a little bit different to most clubs in that we\'re primarily a group of friends who socialise off the bike, but we happen to share a common interest in cycling and cyclesport. We are based in Putney and have regular weekend rides out to Windsor and the Surrey Hills, as well as occasional trips elsewhere.

We have a wide variety of cycling interests amongst club members, from track riding to road racing, and sportives to bike polo. Several of our members have their race licences, and we\'re represented in every category including Elite

We regularly travel further afield to enjoy some of the classic races – this year quite a few of us have ridden the Tour of Flanders and Paris Roubaix sportives, and then watched the pros follow our tyre tracks. We also try and get to see the Ghent and Berlin six day track events.

At the core of the club ethos is a desire to enjoy good rides with good friends.

Lincoln Grand Prix Premier Calendar

Did the Lincoln Grand Prix Premier Calendar today. 160man field trying to squeeze into a 8ft wide 17% cobbled climb every lap, the last place you want to be is at the back. Which is just where I was. I knew I shouldn’t be there but how the devil you move through a bunch so tightly packed up is beyond me. It’s clearly possible as the usual suspects fight it out for victory every year though.

Anyway, after track-standing at the bottom of said climb each lap, the scramble to catch back up to the front runners over the top of the climb means gaps get opened up all the time. After 6 laps of going across gap after gap and cursing myself for being in the position to have to keep making these efforts finally a gap opened up about 10 riders in front of me and by the time I’d passed the riders my side of the gap it was too big to get across. I chased with a few other guys for about a lap, picking off riders who were getting constantly get spat out the back of the bunch, but it was no good. After hearing the gap was 3mins I packed at the top of the climb on the next time through. A bit frustrating as it was getting to the business end of the race, the next time through the bunch was down to about 25-30riders.

Lincoln is a pretty city though, so it wasn’t a totally wasted trip… at least that’s what I’m trying to tell myself! The race certainly has some charm too, if I managed to figure out how to hold position in the bunch by next year I’ll do it again.
